The Peterborough K. M. Hunter Charitable Foundation is named for Kenneth Martin Hunter, who worked in the paper trade in Toronto, ending his career as the president of Buntin Reid Paper. In 1967, he created the K. M. Hunter Charitable Foundation, which donated to medical research, social services, and arts and cultural charities in the Toronto area. After his death in 1991, his two sons took over running the foundation as it expanded. In 2003, in order to better manage administering of grants, the assets of the original foundation were divided and the new Peterborough K. M. Hunter Charitable Foundation was created.
The Peterborough K. M. Hunter Charitable Foundation and the K. M. Hunter Charitable Foundation are run completely independently of each other and focus on different charitable sectors.
The major focus of the Peterborough K. M. Hunter Charitable Foundation is medical research funded through student awards in The Temerty Faculty of Medicine at The University of Toronto.
Secondary areas of focus are Canadian Indigenous Communities, International Development and Environmental Sustainability Education projects. Applications for grants in these categories are considered on an annual basis as described on the How to Apply page.
Additionally, a donation is made each year to The Presbyterian Church in Canada in honour of our founder, who was a faithful member of Glenview Presbyterian Church in Toronto.
