The Peterborough K. M. Hunter Charitable Foundation’s principal activity, which constitutes approximately 50% of annual donations made, is the sponsoring of student awards in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. The University is responsible for selecting recipients through their adjudication process. Recipients are students doing doctoral research in one of the following fields: mental health, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune diseases, cancer, heart and stroke, nutrition, glaucoma, cerebral palsy, diabetes or lung disease.
In 2024, the foundation reached a milestone of over 200 unique students supported. Details in the faculty's article below:

The foundation also supports the Indigenous Health Partners Program run by Temerty Faculty of Medicine's Department of Family and Community Medicine. The Indigenous Health Partners Program (IHPP) supports the development of culturally appropriate health care solutions in Canada’s remote and underserved Indigenous communities. IHPP partners with Indigenous organizations and leadership to address a variety of health challenges, while developing and evaluating solutions based on local knowledge and global best practices. Together, they collaborate to find innovative solutions, build sustainable health systems and increase access to health services for Indigenous communities in Canada through education, research and knowledge translation.
